I chanced upon this Northern Cardinal singing yesterday morning. The rain had just stopped, the clouds turned white and the sky showed a little blue. Due to the sun’s position, the tree’s position and the bird’s position, I ended up at an odd angle to photograph him. I was just glad he didn’t fly away.

Moustache Cup, Sketch 034
Last year I came across the Moustache Cup Collection at the Bell County Museum. I was quite taken with the exhibit. Tea time was a serious business!
Our electricity went out this morning for just over an hour. I sketched this cup while sitting near the dining room window, which usually has a ton of natural light. This morning, however, there is heavy fog and visibility is limited to about 100 yards. This is how the cup looked to me in the fog light.
I managed to find two moustache cups at an antique store, although I don’t think mine are really antique. It seems they were popular from about 1860 to 1930.

Winter’s Day
First day of winter. And, as the song goes (California Dreaming by The Mamas and the Papas), the leaves are brown, the sky is grey.
This little oak tree keeps all its leaves up until the last minute. I’ll try to remember to check it each day to see when the “last minute” is.

In contrast, this Burr Oak tree has lost most of its leaves. The two photographs were taken yesterday, just a few minutes apart.
