Paradise

“Commune with nature,” they said. “See polar bears walk by,” they said. “Your very own cabin,” they said. “A veritable Arctic Circle paradise,” they said. She signed up, wanting to be away from everything and everyone.

No one had said anything about summer snow storms. She could barely see the next domed cabin.

She was grateful for the heating that worked, the fully-stocked kitchenette, and the electric blanket. In the bookcase, she found the complete works of Agatha Christie, PD James, and Ruth Rendell. Maybe paradise is white, cold, and isolated, she thought, reaching for Murder on the Orient Express.

Summer Crocs, Sketch 072

You may have noticed that a lot of my sketch objects are from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They have quite the collection of practically everything! But, as I do have shoes of my own, I thought I’d include at least one pair in my Shoe Series.

Cheesy looking

I have two pair of Crocs: a summer pair (the green, with holes) and a winter pair (black, no holes). I only wear them in the yard. The green, hole-y ones are too cold in the winter and the black, solid ones are too hot in the summer.

Here are links to some of the museum’s shoes that caught my eye.

Weather Up There

I chanced upon this Northern Cardinal singing yesterday morning. The rain had just stopped, the clouds turned white and the sky showed a little blue. Due to the sun’s position, the tree’s position and the bird’s position, I ended up at an odd angle to photograph him. I was just glad he didn’t fly away.

How’s the weather up there?

Moustache Cup, Sketch 034

Last year I came across the Moustache Cup Collection at the Bell County Museum. I was quite taken with the exhibit. Tea time was a serious business!

Our electricity went out this morning for just over an hour. I sketched this cup while sitting near the dining room window, which usually has a ton of natural light. This morning, however, there is heavy fog and visibility is limited to about 100 yards. This is how the cup looked to me in the fog light.

I managed to find two moustache cups at an antique store, although I don’t think mine are really antique. It seems they were popular from about 1860 to 1930.
