The bluebird was hanging out around its nesting box in the early morning. I was waiting for it with my camera. I think it’s sitting on a rain gauge.

Our homework assignment for Week 5 in the Natural History Illustration 101 course was to submit an outline sketch of a mammal and to provide a few sketches of a bird. I chose these two subjects because I have good photographs of them.

Dama Gazelle, from Africa

I turned into my driveway and saw this bird near the front pond. I stopped, rolled down the passenger side window, got my camera ready, then slowly drove forward until I was even with the bird, stopped again, and managed to get a few photos.

Yellow-crowned Night Heron

Do not, I repeat, do not,
Stand right under him.
