Day 2 of the watercolor challenge (and no drawing before painting).

I’m participating in a challenge for the month of June: paint a watercolor every day. Here is my Day 1 effort: a lily. Part of the challenge is to paint without an underlying sketch or drawing. Oh dear. We’ll see how that goes. I didn’t wait quite long enough for the flower paint to dry before I added in the light blue background. Better luck next time, right?

A Perennial Flower
Not all flowers fade
Some keep their shape and colors
Blooming all year long

I recently came across the term Direct Watercolor from a blog post by Marco Taro Holmes. Direct Watercolor means painting in watercolor without an underlying sketch or drawing. I thought I’d give it a try, so here is my first effort. I’m pretty happy that I can recognize it as a pitcher.

For my final illustration for the online course Natural History Illustration 101, I chose to draw a Dama Gazelle. I used a photograph I took a couple of years ago at an exotic game breeding ranch. I’ve been taking drawing lessons for two years now. I can tell you that had I tried this two years ago, it would have ended up as some version of a stick figure gazelle.
