The Daily Special

“That bag, someone turned it in as lost. When he asked for it, I thought it was his.” The three detectives looked at him. He was sweating, pale, so nervous he was barely able to stand.

Detective Wollstonecraft had worked undercover for months, investigating the money laundering operation, tracking it to this diner, to the owner.

“You’re lying,” she said, leaning against the counter. “He asked for the daily special, you gave him the bag. He’s already in custody. Tell us about the money: where it comes from, where it goes. And, sir, please: Just the facts.”

A Polite Introduction

Jane ignored the damage to Q’s latest vehicular toy as she rammed it through the hotel lobby entrance. Following the man with the bulging backpack onto the third floor, she broke down the door only to find him ready with an explosive. He threw it at her.

She crashed through the floor. Falling sheet rock and splintered boards announced her arrival as she landed on the foot of a king size bed. Rising from the dust, she noticed the two wide-eyed people in bed.

Brushing off the debris, she winked at her involuntary hosts, politely introducing herself: “Bond, Jane Bond.”

I always thought that if I ever fell through the floor of a hotel room, landing on some soft surface below, I’d introduce myself as “Bond, Jane Bond.” Here’s to hoping that never, ever happens. I’m pretty sure the reality would be brutal, not at all like we see on TV or in the movies.

Black Lightning

Shrugging on her black leather jacket, Molly saw her reflection in the mirror: wrinkles and laugh lines on her face, framed by roils of grey hair. The red mane of her youth that had given rise to her nickname, Red Molly, was long gone.

Twenty years as governor was enough. She smiled as she put on her helmet, straddling her motorcycle, a 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. Riding it kept her sane though it all, reminding her of the strength of simplicity.

Molly left an envelope for her successor with only one piece of advice inside: Buy a motorcycle and ride.

When I saw the motorcycle in the photo, I thought of Richard Thompson’s song, 1952 Vincent Black Lightning.

A Lot of Explaining To Do

Janet ran after her dog, Cricket, after he pulled the leash from her grasp. She followed him to a small clearing, found him circling a tree, a squirrel objecting noisily from the safety of a high branch.

Picking up the leash, she noticed the headstone and walked over to read its inscription. The name was exactly like hers. The woman’s death date was Janet’s birth date.

Experiencing a moment of lightheadedness, Janet dropped to her knees. Cricket whimpered.

Who was this woman? All she knew is that when she got home, her grandparents had a lot of explaining to do.

For this story, I started out with the idea of someone coming across a headstone with a name exactly like theirs on it.

Travelling Light

Sharon refused to travel without her dictionary and art reference tome. She learned the hard way (Is there any other way?) just how much she could easily carry. She narrowed it down to one small suitcase and a book bag.

She asked herself : The goal in life is to live it fully, right? And not to just sit on the couch watching travel shows? The memories made travelling were worth so much more to her than possessions. That lesson was easy. There was only one more change to make before her next trip: those stupid shoes had to go.

I started out with the words “those stupid shoes” and the idea that no matter how cute the shoes were, they were a terrible choice for travelling.
