Almost Like Magic

“This doesn’t taste so good,” Jonah gagged, his mouth full of blackish, sticky fluff.

“You have to eat it all,” Jake said, turning away, barely hiding his laughter. Jake found an old lollipop stick in his pocket, attached the seed pod to it and told Jonah about its “magical” powers. Jonah wasn’t stupid; he was just young, years younger than his big brother Jake.

Jonah’s stomach enzymes woke the alien pod’s microbots. Undetected, they traversed Jonah’s body, tweaking and mending chromosomes, ensuring a long, healthy life for their host. Jake was mostly right: the microscopic technology was almost like magic.

Michael had his first completed movie script. I just need to get noticed, he thought. Looking up, he saw . . . ? That glare! It hampered his view. He got up on his knees in the booth, peering through the wine bottles.

Is that George Lucas coming into the restaurant? This is it, Michael thought, my big chance.

“Sir, please don’t lean against the —,” the waiter said, touching Michael on the shoulder, startling him.

“Yikes!” Michael said, pushing his weight forward, in surprise. The wine rack teetered, bottles crashing to the floor.

Michael looked around. Everyone had noticed.

Sam’s cell phone rang. “Where are you?” Andy asked.

“At the Crystal Ruins,” Sam replied. “I can find the geocache this time, I’m sure of it.”

“Yeah, right. You’re always sure and always wrong. Your geocaching treks usually end in disaster and you’re allergic to practically everything outside. Why are you doing this?”

“It’s fun,” Sam explained. “You’re overreacting.”

“No, I’m not. I read a GPS better than you, with all the times I’ve rescued you.”

As if on cue, Sam has a sneezing attack. Achoo! Achoo! Achoo!

“Uh oh,” said Sam, “I think both my contacts just popped out.”

“You have something green stuck in your teeth,” Carly said. Joseph attempted to dislodge it. “How about now?” he asked. “Still there,” she said.

He excused himself to their host’s bathroom. In the mirror he saw exactly what he expected to see: nothing. Humans had landed on the moon but, so far, no one had invented a mirror that reflected a vampire’s image.

Picking up their host’s toothbrush by the sink, Joseph gave his fangs a quick going over. Using someone else’s toothbrush? I’ve done worse. When finished, he threw it away. Being undead doesn’t mean being uncouth, he reasoned.

Korkheek started the fire while lnrllin, her husband, unloaded the spaceship. Donning their jet packs, the teenagers, G-mlak and tSikll, immediately abandoned the campsite for their annual race through the Grand Canyon.

Watching the embers fly up and dissipate, Korkheek wondered if this might be their last vacation on Terra. With the high price of dilithium crystals, she didn’t know if they could afford to travel next year.

“Korkheek.” She looked up into her husband’s mournful face. Instantly, she imagined the worst: An accident in the canyon? Where were the children?

“Korkheek,” Inrllinn said, “I forgot to pack the marshmallows.”
