Return to Charcoal

The Cat Muse helped me with my return to charcoal sketching. The bamboo skewers help me with the ellipse of the bowl opening and the spacial relationship between the plum and the white vase.

For this sketch, I decided to create the shapes only using the tones; I didn’t draw the shapes at all. Dark objects still present difficulties for me; they should be more than a shadowy glob.

Art Quilts

The Austin Area Quilt Guild hosted their 2014 quilt show this month. I always come away inspired by the wonderful quilts that people make. One nice thing is that I know some of these people. And while I’m off taking blurry, over-exposed photographs of butterflies and spiders, they create beautiful works of art.

Pat Creswell won First Place in the Art Quilt division with this quilt, Red Tag. She created it in memory of the trees that we are losing due to the drought. The red tag is put on trees that have died and need to be cut down.

This beautiful quilt, Georgia, was created by Mary Ann Vaca-Lambert. Georgia was an abandoned cat that Mary Ann and her husband took in.

UFO

UFO. In this case, it means Unidentified Furry Object.

Recently I spent a few days in Kerrville, Texas. Early one morning, I saw this feline hunting in the field next to the hotel. Trust me when I say it was the size of a small dog, something about the height and weight of a Cocker Spaniel (or maybe even a little taller). The hotel desk clerk agreed with me when I asked her about it, as she had seen it on her way into the building.

Domesticated cat? Sure didn’t look like one.

Small bobcat? Are they white? Inquiring minds want to know . . .

I wish it was a better photo and that there had been something for size comparison, but this is the best I could do under the circumstances.
