The Mockingbird is the first to sing
Long before the dawn
Magical trill, ever changing
Music tugging the sun
Magnetic, demanding the light
If not for the Mockingbird
We would have only night

Up hours before the dawn
Cinderella chores finished ere dew forms on the lawn
Getting an early start is great
What I don’t understand
Is how I’m already behind by eight

Shift Change

Bushes and trees rustle with songs and flutters of waking birds.
Screeches and trills of the night fade in the last moments of darkness.

Nocturnals and diurnals alight in treetop way stations
Crossing paths as they make their way to roost
Or complete their morning ablutions before beginning their search for food.

As the east announces itself, I revel in the beauty of another day’s potential.
