Ghost Riders in the Sky

Leaning against the sink, Frances closed her eyes, trying to decide. Should she stay? She needed a sign.

The counter quivered. She looked up, saw a buffalo stampede erupting out of the dawn’s mist. As they approached, she saw their black horns, red eyes, steel hooves. The massive herd darkened the prairie, yet the sunrise flickered through them.

A cowboy appeared outside her window, his horse rearing up. He looked straight at her; her blood ran cold. Running outside, Frances mounted the second horse that wasn’t there a second ago and rode off chasing the phantom herd into the light.

Leap of Faith

The old man called her Faith (not her real name but she didn’t worry about it). She feigned indifference anytime he looked her way (as cats are wont to do), ate the food he left for her.

The yellow bird just showed up one day. She watched him plug in the cord attached to it. It came alive! The wings moved; its head turned back and forth. It was going to attack!

Instinctively, she launched herself from her hiding place in the tree, claws fully extended, aiming for the big yellow head. She had only one thought in mind: Protect!

Jurassic Park

Something big is alive on the other side,” Stevie whispered, ear against the door.

Alive?” Martin didn’t believe him, but wanted to.

Wild animals, roaming loose, just like in the history holograms.

Ridiculous! There haven’t been any wild animals in centuries.” Martin looked back, taking comfort in the sight of all things familiar: glass, concrete, pavement.

Before Martin could protest, Stevie yanked open both doors only to have their worst nightmare come true: something jumped out at them. They ran, screams obscuring the soft chirping of the cricket as it righted itself on the concrete after bouncing off Stevie’s nose.

An Unexpected Journey

Anne descended the stairs and stopped, as every inch of the lobby was occupied.  A senior hiking club checking in, someone explained without her asking. A silver-haired woman approached her. “We want to be at the top before sundown. You’re welcome to come along.”

She murmured some excuse, returned to her room. Don’t these old people have anything better to do than to climb up the side of a cliff to see a sunset?

Laughter drifted up to her window. She looked out, saw them gathering for their sunset-seeking trek.

Grabbing her jacket, Anne ran after them. “Wait for me!”

Car 54, Where Are You?

Muldoon leaned against the backside of the building. Nothing ever happened when he was on a stake out. Taking the squad car keys out of his pocket, he tossed them from hand to hand. He added his badge and his wallet, congratulating himself on his amateur juggling skills as he kept the three objects from dropping.

Gunshots! Muldoon crouched, reaching for his gun. His badge and wallet landed flat on the grate. The keys, however, folded in on themselves, slipping through the bars. He froze as he heard the splash below.

Car 54!” the police radio crackled. “Where are you?
