I Got You, Babe

Keith loved art, especially other people’s art. He stole several small, valuable items from the Chateau de Sable. (He wondered about people who name their houses.) Back in the car, he turned on his phone. Immediately, the ringtone “I got you, babe!” chimed. His date from the previous night, Hazel, was calling.

“Babe,” he answered, “I’m at work. I’ll call you back.”

“Actually, now’s a good time to talk. I’m here.”

She walked up to his window. He was surprised to see her wearing a badge and gun. Detective Hazel Stoddard greeted him: “I got you, babe. You’re under arrest.”

The Music Room
Lawrence thought his arms were going to fall off; they were so achy from carrying his son around. He just had to put him down, even if for a few minutes. The crib was in the bedroom where his wife was sleeping, exhausted. He couldn’t go back in there.

Opening the top of the cabinet, Lawrence gently lowered his son into it. Slowly, softly, he picked out a few notes of Praeludium No. 1 on the spinet. His son’s cries diminished. The more Lawrence played, the more his son relaxed. By the end of the piece, the baby was asleep.

Up the Down Staircase

“They’re really gone.” Nichelle looked up at her twin brother leaning against the railing. “They were different, but in a good way.”

“Different in the all best ways,” Nicolas kicked a stone; it tumbled down the cracked stairs. “We can do it, too, Nichelle, like they did. We can figure it out. They showed us how.”

“I think stars don’t always fall downward.” Nichelle picked up the stone and tossed it back up to the top. “I think they just went up the down staircase. We’ll wait here until dark. Tonight we will see two new stars in the sky.”

Wild Blue Yonder

“Isn’t she a beauty?” Danny sat down next to Marlena.

She looked out the window at the private jet. “Yes, she is.”

“How do you like being the pilot?” Without waiting for an answer, Danny continued, “Myself, I love to fly. Each trip is an adventure into the wild blue yonder. Blue is my favorite color.”

“No kidding.”

Danny checked his watch. “Yippee! It’s time to board.” He picked up his bags, ran out of the lounge yelling, “Dibs on shotgun!”

“You don’t have to call ‘shotgun,’ Danny, ” Marlena sighed as she walked to the plane. “You are the co-pilot!”

Childhood’s End

Sarah hadn’t been to the coffee shop in years, had almost forgotten the window. It was her first commission, while still in her teens. She had been ecstatic. A professional artist! I’m on my way!

And she was on her way – to being poor. She was shocked to discover how many people wanted fine art at garage sale prices. She left behind her childish fantasies of overnight success.

Hard work, hard years; they all led to now. Like the colorful light streaming through the stained glass, it was only after major transformations that the beauty of her adult life resulted.
