Disputed Territory
Cats are so transparent, the Loggerhead Shrike mused. The feline tail twirled back and forth as it was sneaking up on the grasshopper. At the bottom of the post, Cat got ready to pounce. Timing is everything, Shrike thought as it dove down, snatching up the grasshopper in its beak.
Cat jumped up, swiping its paw at the now empty post. “Hey! That’s mine!” Cat objected.
“Don’t think so.” Shrike impaled the grasshopper on a nail protruding from the porch.
Deciding it never really wanted the grasshopper anyway, Cat started licking its paws, silently making plans for revenge. Next time . . .

Nice! Clever bird, but poor cat:)
That Loggerhead Shrike hasn’t heard the last of that cat, that’s for sure!
Very original take on the prompt! I like it!
The opening battle in the war of wits between natural adversaries.
Very bloodthirsty story. Do shrikes really impale their prey?
Yes, shrikes do impale their prey sometimes using thorns or barbed wire.
I’ve always wanted to see a shrike but never managed to yet. Being a bird, he needs to be wary of the cat. Nice take on the prompt.
Shrikes hang around our area some so I occasionally get to hear them calling out.
Such a territorial little beast, Mr. Shrike. I wonder how long him and Cat have been battling this war… and what Cat will do next.
Powerful imagery. And the voice sounds so believable.
Thanks. Probably a never-ending battle between those two.
The I’ll pretend I never-wanted-it-anyway paw lick is so true!
Sour Grapes, well done
Never underestimate your opponent….I foresee dark future. Nicely done.
