Light from the Past

“How long did it take you to get home?” Sharon led her neighbor, Anne, into the kitchen.

“Five hours. The low water crossings were flooded.” Anne sat down at the counter. “How long has the electricity been out?”

“Not sure.” Sharon lit her grandmother’s oil lamps as the light started to fade. “It was off when I got here. Care for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with some chips?”

“Best offer I’ve had all day.” Grateful for the light from the lamps, Sharon and Anne raised their water bottles in a toast to Mother Nature and Trudy, Sharon’s grandmother.
