Right and Wrong

“Why are you upset?” Amy reached for Earl’s hand. “Just because I see something you don’t doesn’t make me wrong.”

Earl avoided her touch. “Yes, it does. I’m always right. Aliens do not exist!”

As if on cue, a flotilla of brightly lit, tiny spaceships descended in their yard. Amy ran outside to greet them. “I told you they’d return!” The spaceships surrounded Amy, swirling.

Earl refused to be convinced. “Fireflies!”

A shimmering net enveloped Amy, lifting her into the sky as the spaceships flew away in formation.

Earl screamed at Amy as she disappeared.“Fireflies, I tell you, just fireflies!”

Boys in a Boat

Cousins Tom and Jerry sprinted as soon as they saw the boat.

“Just like Venice!” Jerry cried. “A gondola!” Tom shouted.

They had only a moment before their families, gathered for a picnic, caught up to them. Shoving the boat into the canal, they jumped in and pushed away from the dock.

Their timing was perfect.

Cresting the bridge, their families stopped and focused their attention on the boys in full serenade mode in the middle of the canal.

Shaking their heads, everyone continued on, unfazed at the sight of two boys standing in a boat filling with water, sinking.

Seasons Change

Sienna remembered finding her first wasp nest, amazed to discover it was made of paper, which was itself made of wood. Her young imagination opened to a world of chemistry.

The nests were sturdy but built for only one season. She learned that lesson many times in her scientific career as well as her personal life: some things were short-lived, but in their own moment strong, beautiful.

Retirement awaited her just outside the lab door. Picking up the wasp nest from her desk, Sienna thought it an accurate life symbol: seasons change. It was time for her to move on.

The Quest

Sir Duncan eyed the pier, the last leg of the dangerous quest. It was his mission – and his alone – to deliver the magic potion to the queen. He would not fail.

He sprinted, unsurprised by the appearance of the Kraken, its appendages smashing down, raining water as if from a hurricane. His heart beat fast as he darted hither and yon, avoiding the crushing blows. He fought off the cephalopod, leaving the empty-handed monster behind.

Sir Duncan knelt before the queen. “Your sunscreen, m’lady.”

Angela smiled as her son jumped in the lake, ready to battle the Loch Ness monster.

Some Explaining To Do

Meg wondered what surprise Eric left for her this time; he constantly played tricks on her, trying to get her fired. She climbed the ladder to clean the uppermost shelves. Her shoe stuck to the step a bit. In trying to get it loose, she lost her balance, falling. Broken glass and a dead body waited for the first shift.

The police sergeant noticed the gum on her shoe and its counterpart on the ladder step, wondering what it had to do with Meg falling.

DNA testing would pinpoint the gum’s owner. Soon, Eric would have some explaining to do.
