Our brutal Texas summer is just about here. I offer you some lovely shade, in anticipation.

Startled
Along the crest of the Guadalupe I walk
In the shelter of trees whose ancestors
Remember the beginning of time
The river shares its history with me
As it flows past the bend, into the future
Doves fly up at my approach
Only then do we notice each other
The deer and I, startled
Memory Tree
My memories are housed in a backlit tree
A few branches almost as bright as day
Details dangle on the leaves and
Murmur in the background
The tree shrinks some memories so small
Its trunk conceals them in its woody crevices
Where no light reaches
The farthest twigs hold on to my distant past
Out of my reach, forever
NaPoWriMo Day 15
No Escape
Temperatures drop
Screaming wind slashes the earth
For some, no escape
NaPoWriMo Day 14
Searching
Exhausted from searching
In my dreamland quests
Always seeking the trees
Leaves furl away at my glance
Unfurl to peek back, claiming it’s the wind
Bare roots and branches seem to hide nothing
But I wonder
NaPoWriMo Day 12
