Larry arrived at the lakeside, out of breath. He’d found six of the scavenger hunt items and only lacked this last one. This time I’m ahead of everyone, Larry thought, especially Mountain Mike. Larry smiled at the thought of holding up the first-place trophy.

Larry deduced that the last item was on the lake’s island; he scanned the shores for a canoe.

A wop-wop noise broke his concentration: a helicopter approached. It hovered over the island and a figure descended on a rescue line. Larry recognized the neon orange jacket even from this distance: Mountain Mike.

Curses! Foiled again!

“What’s all this?” Sheila asked. “Oh, Tim started his collection when we drove to the California coast. He always had bulging pockets while we were there,” Nancy said. Sheila grew up in Montana, never traveled past the mountains and considered the oceans part of a parallel universe, but not hers.

She slipped the striped shell into her pocket, not knowing why she didn’t ask for it; Nancy would have given it to her, she knew that. At home, Sheila put the seashell up to her ear, gasping when she heard the ocean’s roar calling her name.

Do you own enough keyboards?” Mark asks, astonished, peering into the music room.

Looking around, Isabel sees only old friends. She touches the nearest keyboard, sighing, remembering writing her first song. Even now, she can hear echoes of her opening night on stage, feeling incredulous at becoming a “professional musician.” She had been excited and terrified. Years later, playing her Yamaha Motif XF8, she toured with Stevie Wonder. What a magical time that was. Isabel loves all her keyboards and the memories they create together.

She notices Mark waiting in the doorway, expectantly.

Um, what was the question?” she asks.

Almost Like Magic

This doesn’t taste so good,” Jonah gagged, his mouth full of blackish, sticky fluff.

You have to eat it all,” Jake said, turning away, barely hiding his laughter. Jake found an old lollipop stick in his pocket, attached the seed pod to it and told Jonah about its “magical” powers. Jonah wasn’t stupid; he was just young, years younger than his big brother Jake.

Jonah’s stomach enzymes woke the alien pod’s microbots. Undetected, they traversed Jonah’s body, tweaking and mending chromosomes, ensuring a long, healthy life for their host. Jake was mostly right: the microscopic technology was almost like magic.

Michael had his first completed movie script. I just need to get noticed, he thought. Looking up, he saw . . . ? That glare! It hampered his view. He got up on his knees in the booth, peering through the wine bottles.

Is that George Lucas coming into the restaurant? This is it, Michael thought, my big chance.

Sir, please don’t lean against the —,” the waiter said, touching Michael on the shoulder, startling him.

Yikes!” Michael said, pushing his weight forward, in surprise. The wine rack teetered, bottles crashing to the floor.

Michael looked around. Everyone had noticed.
