Day 1: Long Days, Short Years

I liked the 2018 Direct Watercolor challenge a lot so I decided to do another challenge for July. There is another watercolor challenge for July, World Watercolor Month, in case you are interested. As I painted a watercolor every day in June, I will choose something different for July.

I’m going to dust off my calligraphy and lettering supplies and give them a workout. This morning I practiced the Foundation script, developed by an English calligraphy revivalist, Edward Johnston, in Writing and Illuminating and Lettering (1906). No, I don’t have that book. I have the Speedball Textbook, a Comprehensive Guide to Pen & Brush Lettering (24th Edition) by Angela Vangalis and Randall Hasson.

Practicing the alphabet in a script is all well and good, but what should I do with it? I love quotes, so I will write out a quote every day.

00s 01 Long Days

Considering how long it’s been since I picked up a calligraphy pen (years and years!), this isn’t too bad. It looks a little plain, so I’ll have to figure out how to embellish it. Sounds as if there is some experimentation coming my way!

I used the Foundation script, a Speedball C-5 nib, and Higgins waterproof indigo ink on Fabriano hot pressed 140-lb traditional white watercolor paper. The hot pressed paper is smooth while the cold pressed paper has more texture.
