Almost Ready
A hole in the bread? Stan’s mom suggested an air pocket in the dough. Silly idea, he thought.
He decided it was proof of the Federation’s secret testing of their newest generation of phasers. Stan imagined himself on an alien planet, always ready for action, his aim deadly and accurate.
He spread peanut butter on the bread, then tossed it up. He took aim, firing his imaginary phaser, once again saving Earth from destruction.
Stan’s mom called out, “Almost time to go. Ready?”
He looked at the bread that had landed on the floor, peanut-butter side down.
“Almost,” Stan answered.
