The Empty Slot
“Mom, why don’t you get rid of this stuff?” Jordan picked up the rock he painted when he was nine. “You hang onto the past too much.”
“You and Jeff were happy to display your treasures on these shelves.” Susan looked at the boys’ “art” collection, smiling.
“That was a long time ago.” Jordan put the rock back. “You kept that one small slot for yourself, but you never put anything in it.”
“My slot? It was always full, full of things unseen. Love, hope, memories. I imagined it as a resting place for faeries as they watched over you.”

It’s not just the kids who see things that others don’t. Nicely done. 🙂
That’s the trick – to keep the last slot full of all possibilities
So true. An open hand holds more than a closed one.
That’s beautiful. Kids have that tendency to patronize parents as they get older. That mum has the perfect reply.
Nice heart tugging story.
That was so lovely. A good answer from a loving mom.
Wonderful!
