A Room of One’s Own

“Why would anyone build a round room out back?” Don looked at his wife, Yvonne, in the arched doorway. “I’m not spending the money to repair this place. You won’t find me stepping foot in here.” Yvonne watched Don return to the house. She had hated the thought of moving here, away from her family, but tradition dictated that the wife follow the husband.

She ran her hands over the stone mills, imagining the women before her, finding refuge as they ground their flour. Yvonne gave thanks to whoever built this place that soon would be hers and hers alone.
