Career Opportunities

Across the walkway, Sal heard girls giggling as Geno checked the safety chains on the swing ride. Girls who came back time and time again to see Geno.

Sal glared from across the walkway. Those girls should be giggling for me. But Sal was stuck in the cotton candy kiosk, where bratty kids came to get a summer’s worth of sugar in one night, frequently getting sick from too many sweets.

When I become a ride operator, Sal promised, I’ll be more popular than Geno!

Sal decided to share his misery. “Hey, kid!” Sal yelled. “Want some free cotton candy?”

Sounds of Silence

Hey, Mouse! Cat got your tongue and your tail?” The Twin Speakers snickered.

Oh, joy, thought Mouse, Tweedledee and Tweedledum. “There’s nothing wrong with me; not every connection do you have to see. I’ll have you know wireless is the way to go.”

Oh, a poet and didn’t know it!” the Twin Speakers said in unison, laughing, almost falling over.

Mouse sighed. He scooched his pointer over to the bottom right of the screen, resting it on top of the speaker icon. Two clicks later, the Twin Speakers were muted.

The sounds of silence, Mouse thought. Music to my ears.

Clueless in Philadelphia

Sitting at the corner, Gerry stared at the barricades blocking his normal route to work. He’d overslept and taking a detour would make him even later. Deciding to chance it, he drove around the barricade.

Halfway across the bridge, Gerry looked in his rear view mirror and saw a long line of bright lights, mostly police vehicles.

Two motorcycle officers pulled up beside him, lights flashing, escorting him until he was off the bridge. They motioned for him to pull over.

Gerry rolled down his window. “What’s all the fuss, officer? It’s not like the pope was coming to visit.

First Sale

Forcing open the rusted gate, Tim looked forlornly at the property. The older couple behind him bought it sight unseen. It was his first sale as a real estate agent and he just knew they would demand that the transaction be nullified.

The man snorted. The woman giggled. Within seconds, they were laughing so hard they cried. Older, but not so old they couldn’t swing the sledgehammers in the trunk to uncover the buried cash from the robbery all those years ago. They could see the patio base that covered their treasure was undisturbed.

Old people are weird, Tim decided.

Decision Point

MaryLou sat in the canoe doing the Zen thing and visualizing herself out on the lake: calm, strong, and sure of her destination. Back in the cabin, her friends were sleeping off the previous night’s alcoholic indulgences. She wondered why they had come if they had no intentions of ever going outdoors.

She looked at the stone trail marker. It wasn’t telling her which way to go, only that she had a choice. A decision point. How many had she disregarded in her life?

Easing herself into the bottom of the canoe, MaryLou stretched out, deciding to take a nap.
